Font Notes:
Described in Mestre i Godes (1999) and Trepas (1993). A second old font of the rectangular or trapezoidal type; according to Trepat (1993), this object was discovered [in the 1980s] when the retable was removed for restoration; it was buried by the door of Sant Pau; it was unearthed and located in the nave. It is a granite piece shaped like a sarcophagus, which may very well have been its original use; it was however used for many years as [one of] the church's "oil font". It is larger than the other oil fonts of the area and has a stone lid with a wooden access trap or cover; three of the sides are decorated: a lion with a simplified human face [although it is common way of representing lion heads in not-so-fine Romanesque objects], a rampant lion and a bird (eagle?) with a rabbit in its claws (Mestre i Godes, 1999). Described and illustrated in Catalunya romànica (1984- , vol. XV: 152-153), where a suggested 12th or 13th century is given; this source notes also the human-like face of the lion on the narrow side; it is also noted here that the image of the horse carved on one of the long sides of the object may have been a later addition, since it does not stylistically fit with the other animals [NB: is this a reference to the other oil font in this church?]. Cabestany, Matas & Palau (2005) suggest attribution to a local rural workshop of the late 12th or early 13th century.
