Church Notes: This rural chapel is said to have been the mid-12thC parish church of the town of Canales de Suso, as suggested in López de Silanes Valgañón (2000) -- excellent report on the ermita in Arteguias [https://www.arteguias.com/ermita/ermitasancristobalcanalessierra.htm] [accessed 19 Jan 2021]
Described in López de Silanes Valgañón (2000) as a Romanesque baptismal font of the second half of the 12th century. Described and illustrated in Sáenz Rodríguez (2004) notes that this font is of type, rather than a workshop, in the Sierra de la Demanda, and suggests similarities with the font at nearby Ventrosa, and the one at Cascajares de la Sierra, in Burgos province; Sáenz Rodríguez (ibid.) notes that, unlike the latter, this is a rustic work, and dates it, like the rural chapel itself, to the mid-12th century; it was repaired and restored in 1993. In the Enciclopedia del románico en La Rioja (2008) as a baptismal font of the mid-12th century, with possible design similariities to the fonts at Cascajares de la Sierra (Burgos) and Garray (Soria) [cf. Index entries for both]. It is a tub-shaped basin decorated at the upper rim with a broken moulding [or, is it ball motif?], a band of saw-tooth below, and a blind arcade of twelve round arches resting on double torsade columns. Described and illustrated in RIOJA MONUMENTAL [www.larioja.com]. Tub-shaped quasi-cylindrical baptismal font dated to the 12th century; sides adorned with a blind arcade above a rope motif; higher up, below the rim, a band of saw-tooth motif. Shows traces of having been burned.
