INFORMATION
FontID: 02557LOU
Church/Chapel: Ancienne priorale Saint-Loup
Church Patron Saints: St. Lupus of Sens [aka Loup]
Church Location: 77650 Saint-Loup-de-Naud, France
Country Name: France
Location: Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France
Directions to Site: Located at the D49-D106 crossroads, ESE of Provins with a font of somewhat similar shape
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocèse de Meaux
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, at the W end, S side
Century and Period: 16th century, Renaissance
Cognate Fonts: The magnificent font at Provins (Ste-Croix) is related in shape and date, although much more elaborate.
Church Notes: original church ca. 980, a Benedictine priory founded by the abbey of Saint-Pierre-le-Vif in Sens -- The present church of St. Loup, a late Romanseque/early Gothic temple of the late 12th century, has a wonderful mullioned portal with beautiful sculpture; the portal is listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00087270].
"The church also has a strange 12c baptismal font" (France, 1985, p. 553). Enlart (1902) describes it as "fonts en forme de navette". Listed and illustrated in Palissy [ref.: PM77001572] as a baptismal font of the 16th century "recouverts d'un couvercle en cuivre datant du 18e siècle" [cf. infra].
On-site notes: the font at Saint-Loup is oval shaped, with pointed ends, similar to the one at the Sainte-Croix church in Provins, but plainer. Its only ornamentation is a triangle (point down) containing a three-branch motif on the upper side of the basin, both front and back. The moulded base is, like Provins', of a later date. The 19th-century (?) lid has the same shape as the font itself and is made of wood coated with copper (?); it has a lock at each narrow end, a cross in the middle and two acanthus motifs to the side of the centre part. A local association, Les Après-Midi de Saint-Loup [www.saintloupdenaud.com/restaurer.html] [accessed 25 January 2018] reports damage and theft of cover ornaments: "Sur les fonts baptismaux les ornements en cuivre ont été dévissés et volés".
