Corblet (1881-1882) informs that the font was the work of "Josse Dotzenger, de Worms, grand maître de la corporation des maçons de Strasbourg", and quotes the abbé Bourassé' s praise of the craftmanship "Si quelquefois, [...] on a employé avec justesse le mot d'orfrèvrerie en pierre pour indiquer le fini et le précieux du travail gothiqhe, c'est surtout pour ce baptistère qu'il peut être employé" [NB: the illustration in Corblet is labelled "Cathédrale de Strasbourg" but it is actually a drawing of the font from Eschau that is now [2002] at the Musée de l'Oeuvre de Notre-Dame in Strasbourg]. Enlart (1902) mentions a font at the cathedral of Strasbourg, octagonal and of Gothic style, but calls it the work of Jean Hammerer. Described and illustrated in Doré (2007), who notes that the date of the font appears twice [on two of the sides of the foot: once in Roman numerals, the second in Gothic script]. Doré (ibid.) spells the name of the artist as 'Jost Dotzinger'. "Wonderfully carved font by Jodoque Dotzinger, 1453" (France: a Phaidon Cultural Guide, 1985). Listed in Palissy (1993 / 1997) [ref.: PM67000361] as a baptismal font of pink sandstone dated 1453, the work of Jodoque Dotzinger.
