Church Notes: Quedlinburg Abbey [Kaiserlich freie weltliche Reichsstift Quedlinburg] founded 936 by Otto I; abbey church had an attached college of secular canonesses (Stiftsdamen); church damaged by fire in 1070; re-built and re-consecrated in 1129 -- four monasteries here (St. Wiperti, Premonstratensian; St. Marien, Benedictine; the Franciscan monastery in the Old Town, and the Augustinian monastery in the New Town) were destroyed in the Peasant Uprisings of the 15th-17thC,

Wulf (1996) makes no mention of a font in his description of the old collegiate church of Saint-Servais (formerly Saint Denis) at Quedlinburg, but a photograph of the the southern crypt shows a vat-like octagonal font with some carving visible, though unidentifiable, on the facing sides. It could have been originally a font similar to the one in Gernrode nearby (ill. 140, Wulf, 1996). On-site notes: the much eroded and damaged object located now [September 2017] in the small apse at the east end of the south side of the crypt, does indeed appear to have been a baptismal font, and, perhaps, as suggested in Wulf [cf. supra] one not too disimilar to the font extant at Gernrode; it is of octagonal shape outside and has a deeply-set arcade of pointed arches that are now empty but probably housed statues originally [there are holes drilled in the stone that may have been used to secure the original carvings to the sides of the basin]; there is also a band of decoration around the base, like the rest of the font, much damaged now. There is no font cover present now; a modern baptismal dish of metal is mounted atop the basin. The basin interior shows no drain and appears to have been filled with a modern substance, probably to reingorce the badly-cracked stone.
