Noted in Ahrens (1992). Wulf (1996) describes it as a baptismal font of the early 16th century having six semicircular turrets in the trilobed niches with figures of saints; the intermediary fields are framed top and bottom by a band of palmettes and rings and show, under an arch, carved figures of remarkable quality; the six now badly eroded scenes, are identified as: the baptism of Christ, Christ and Nicodemus, the massacre of the Innocents, Christ in Majesty between Peter and John, the deluge and one other, unidentified, scene. Noted in Drake (2002) as one of a group of Westphalian cylinder fonts, a sub-group of which have figures beneath a Lombard frieze (sub-group B3) [the fonts listed in this sub-group are: Aplerbeck, Bochum, Bramsche, Hagen, Lippoldsberg, Rastede]. On-site notes: six-sided basin with scenes on the sides and figures at the rounded angles; beginning on the present east side: 1)Massacre of the Innocents in a round arch - corner: St. Michael fighting the dragon in a trefoil arch; 2)Majestas Domini with St. Pater and St. Paul (John?) - corner: St. Stephenl? [Bishop standing on postrate animal?]; 3)Ascension of Christ with Apostles present [Deluge?] - corner: a haloed figure standing on a postrate human; 4)Presentation at the Temple - corner: St. George? St. Cornelius? [haloed figure armed with sword and shield stands on postrate human]; 5)Baptism of Christ in the Jordan - corner: St. Catherine of Alexandria [haloed figure armed with wheel and palm branch stands on postrate creature]; 6)Christ and Nicodemus? in a double pointed arch (figure on the left has cruciferous nimbus; figure on the right has characteristic Jew hat) - corner: St. George? St. Cornelius? [figure wearing armour holds banner in right hand and shield in left; standing on a postrate human]; the whole in a trefoiled arch. The corners are tower-shaped, and have Greek crosses carved on the sides; on the upper side of the basin; between the tower tops are bands of fine vine pattern. The Presentation scene is badly damaged but a figure on the right appears to hold a candle. The font appears to have been removed from the church and buried in the churchyard during the mandate of Landgraf Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, between 1592 and 1627, and the enforcement of his puritanical Calvinist 'Zweite Reformation'; it was unearthed in the 19th century and re-installed inside the church; the old basin now stands on a short and plain hexagonal base, modern. The old cover was lost, but the upper rim of the basin still has the scars from its metal staples, some of which remain; there is also a metal tube inserted through one of the holes on the side of the rim. A modern ceramic baptismal dish is supported by a metal rack, also modern. There appears to have been a centre drain hole in the basin, but it has been cemented over.
