Church Notes: built mid-16thC
Baptismal font with ciborium/baldaquin, like those at Morlaix and La Martyre, all of them in the Finistere dept. of France (Chastel, 1966, p. 288). Enlart (1902) lists the actual font as being Tournai-like and having a 5-column base. [On-site notes: we found, instead, an octagonal mounted font with a small constructional second basin. The larger basin has no ornamentation other than the graded chamfering of the bowl towards the base. The base is also octagonal and adorned with a blind arcade. The second basin is more like a protrusion [cf. also Index entry for Comana No. 1] than a proper second basin; the base which sits now under this part appears to have been added later and one can see the font without any base for the protrusion at all; perhaps it was added later for fear that this second basin would break off, as has been the case in some proper double-fonts of the area. Also, as in the case of the Comana No. 1 font, the most striking furnishing is the baldaquin itself, a massive 25-feet tall dark oak structure attributed to the Lerrel workshop of Landivisiau]. [NB: a cylindrical metal [lead?] container found inside this church was photographed by Colin Hinson for BSI on 7 September 2009; there are two interesting characteristics of this object that may be relevant in the context of this Index: it resembles the kind of metal [lead?] lining found in fonts of this area and across the Channel in Britain; it has a cover that looks very much like the covers of fonts in this area, where a small trap door is cut in the cover proper for easy access to inner basin well without the need to remove or lift the whole cover; we have no information on the origin or use of this object]
