A note and a drawing of this font appeared in the Bulletin Monumental (2e serie, t. 2, vol. Ruprich-Robert (1855) mentions a noteworthy font here, without further details. Described as a "pièce superbe" by Cloquet (1890 and 1895) who considers it an anomaly yet to be explained, and reserves judgment by calling it an exception which confirms the rule: "cuve ronde monopédiculée [...] quatre têtes humaines en saillie sur leur pourtour". Enlart (1902) reports that similar fonts, made from the same stone, can be found in the area around Reims and wonders if it should not be attributed to the workshops of the Ardennes region where that type of stone abounds (as cited in Cloquet, 1895). Described simply as a Tournai font in Chastel (1966). Enlart (1902) lists it as a hemispheric basin with a square contour at the top created by the four heads which adorn the corners. The illustration in Lasteyrie (1929) shows the basin: two of the protrudings heads are visible, the one on the left side is male, crowned, with a short mane and bearded; the one on the right has long hair and is also male and bearded; the upper and lower rims of the basin have rope moulding motif; a third head can also be seen, without much detail; in between, lovely palmette motif quite similar to the one often found on some of the Tournai fonts. The thick pedestal of the basin is cylindrical and there is a lower base. Ronse (1929) suggests the probability that there had been four outer colonnettes that were removed [NB: the argument that a transition period in which the shafts were not used but the 'environment' for them was still kept in the design should be taken into consideration]. Ghislain (1986) describes it as a product of the Tournai workshops, but in a design closer to that of the Mosan fonts. In Lotthé (1940). Described and illustrated in Oursel (1994). Described and illustrated in Drake (2002), who lists it as "Tournai attribution in doubt". [NB: both photographic records from the 1920s (Ronse and Lasteyrie) show two iron staples from the old cover in the upper rim; they are no longer present in the later photographs of the font]
