Font Notes:
Suckling (1846-1848) writes: "The Church [...] is of Norman constuction". The CRSBI (2008) dates the south doorway stylistically to the early-12th century. The present font appears Perpendicular, an octagonal basin with deeply-carved panels in which Tudor roses alternate with blank hanging shields, the frames of the panels decorated with tiny rosettes; cherub heads adorn the upper level of the underbowl chamfer, the lower being carved into a graded moulding; the pedestal base is octagonal-to-square, with seated lions at the angles alternating with slender buttrsses on the sides; square lower base with chamfered angles; on a plain octagonal plinth with kneeling stone. The wooden cover, said to be of the 17th century, has a plain octagonal platform base that fits over the rim, with the usual arrangement of four scroll ribs set at 90-degree angles of a turned pivot with a ball finial. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original Norman church].
