Inventoried in the database Palissy [ref.: PM08000462] with date in the 12th century; decorated with four protruding human heads and a freeze of plamettes and animal heads. Illustrated in Collins (1981). Listed in Drake (2002) as a Mosan font of the Romanesque period. Only the basin is original in this font, the base probably added later when the original was lost or destroyed; the basin is cylindrical and shallow, with the four heads at 90-dergree angles characteristic of the fonts of this group. The ornamentation on the font at St-Loup appears similar to the one on the font at Bogny-sur-Meuse, although done by a less skilled hand: the lion head and palm-like prolongations of the Saint-Loup font look squat and clumsy, whereas those of the Bogny-sur-Meuse font are flowing, agile and dynamic. One could be a copy of, or an inspiration for, the other. The original metal staples to secure the lid are visible.
