Country Name: Sweden
Location: Småland, Kronobergs län
Directions to Site: The old church is located off (N) local road G858, across from the old church -- Dädesjö is just N-W of Vaxjo and in its municipality. Drev and Sjösås, with similar fonts, are just a few more kms to the N of Braas, not far from Dädesjö itself.
Ecclesiastic Region: Växjö stift
Historical Region: Uppvidinge härad, Kronobergs län
Font Location in Church: Inside the new church, in the chancel, to the right of the altar
Date: ca. 1200?
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Njudungsmästaren [Blomqvist] / Njudungsgruppen [Borg, SHM] / Bestiarius, Group 4 [Drake]
Cognate Fonts: Drev, Sjösås (Småland)
Church Notes: The old Dädesjö 13thC(?) church was not demolished but turned into a grain storage facility. The new one was built in 1796 across the road from the old one, reusing some of the furnishings, including the old baptismal font. The paintings by master Sighmunder from the old church are worth a visit.

Noted in Blomqvist (1929) as one of the baptismal font made of sandstone by the 'Njudungsmästaren'. Söderberg (1957: [14]) dates it ca. 1200. Described and illustrated in Ullen (1976: 31-35); also in Carlsson (1976: 127 and pl. 196) who dates it to ca. 1190. Romanesque sandstone font of a type common in Småland [cf. Index entries for Drev, Sjösås, just to the north of Dädesjö] in which the cylindrical basin is decorated with a rope motif at the upper rim; below it, an arcade of whose round arches contain each a fabulous beast. At each spandrel, a plant decoration, while the arches and columns are made of beaded-ribbon. The basin appears to be broken at its middle (horizontaly). The base has two levels: the upper level appears to have the four heads typical of many medieval Swedish fonts; a sloping platform separates it from the lower base which shows also four heads, less defined than the upper ones, with a rib motif in between, just like the upper base; the lower bottom of the base is actually square. Inventoried in Borg (2002) as a 'Njudungsgruppen' baptismal font made of sandstone 1170-1220; the animals of the base are noted as lions in Borg. Listed in Drake (2002: 183) as a baptismal font of the Bestiarius workshop (Group 4). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910727F1] as a 'Njudungsgruppen' baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century; the basin is reported as broken horizontally through its middle. No cover present.
