Scene Description: Source caption: "Iglesia de San Sebastián. El abad P. Baltasar Díaz decide sustituir la iglesia románica (ca. 1100), levantada sobre otra visigoda, por parte del edificio en mal estado, su oscuridad, distintos niveles y consejo del arquitecto Ventura Rodríguez. El 21 de octubre de 1751 se coloca la primera piedra, según trazas de Ventura Rodríguez y Antonio Machuca y Vargas (1752-1761), planos que serían modificados, principalmente por dificultades económicas. Se terminó en 1792, aunque definitivamente sería el 20 Octubre 1816. Una obra del último barroco con formas del clasicismo herreriano, discutida por el maravilloso espacio románico que la acompaña."

Scene Description: the reddish band and "13500 UB" notation are part of the author's explanation on the location of the font: "Dentro de la iglesia nos encontramos con un vórtice de 13500 UB. Se halla en lo que en la actualidad es la entrada principal de la misma; sobre él descansa una pila bautismal románica (que además sirve de pila para el agua bendita). Resulta extraño para todo aquel que accede por primera vez a la iglesia encontrar en su interior junto al portón, la pila bautismal; no es común situarla en este lugar, he visitado infinidad de templos y nunca antes me encontré la pila en esta ubicación. ¿Es señal de que hubo en su momento entre los monjes alguno con sensibilidad radiestésica?"

Church Notes: original monastery 7thC Visigothic -- wonderful Romanesque cloister; monastery re-built in the 18thC by Ventura Rodríguez (1717–1785)
On-site notes: tub-shaped font has triple-ring rim; also a double incised line runs all around the basin about 2/3 down the side; on one side of the basin is cut a motif in the shape of a stylised pilgrim shell; below it is an incised trapezoid; the base and lower base have both been cut in the shape of a cross; another piece of the same shape appears to be the plinth, and it is almost entirely buried in the flooring. [NB: the web site www.art-terra.com/fotos/pilabaut1.gif [blind reference now] showed an image of the font with and without the lining insert which has been made to stop the seepage and protect the porous stone of the basin].
