Church Address: Praza do Obradoiro, s/n, 15704 Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Spain -- Tel.: +34 981 58 35 48
Site Location: Coruña, Galicia, Spain, Europe
Ecclesiastic Region: Diócesis de Santiago de Compostela
Additional Comments: disappeared font? (the one from the early baptistery?)
Font Notes:
The large trapezoidal marble font situated to the right of the entrance looks somewhat derelict and seems out of place in this majestic church now. Lampérez y Romea (1930, t. 1, p. 326) mentions a polygonal baptistery, the "Baptisterio de San Juan", which existed here until one of the many renovations and expansions of this cathedral.
Credit and Acknowledgements: We are grateful to the canons of this cathedral for providing full access to the fonts and the time to document them with very short notice, despite the demands created by the thousands of pilgrims and visitors crowding the temple at all times. We are also grateful to Mikel Unanue and to Andy Eccles for their additional photographs of the font
