Church Notes: There was once a Cistercian monastery next to this church, the Real Monasterio de San Martin de Castañeda.
Illustrated in Sáinz Sáiz (1999). On-site notes: a granite font with interesting ornamentation on the sides of the basin, which is the only part left of the original font; the images, now badly eroded, include: a monk wearing a pointed hood and holding a tall flower (?); a figure with long hair, a toga and a book to his chest; a large ornate trefoiled cross; another hooded monk; another ornate trefoiled cross; an angel with open wings. To judge by the presence of the monk figures on the sides of this font, it could well have originated in the Cistercian monastery that existed right next to the church. The present base is not the original. The font stood for a long time out in the street. Iron hinges evident in the rim. The general appearance, due to the material -coarse granite- and the exposure damage, is of a crude object and rudimentary carving, which lead us to think of an early date despite Bond's warning about assigning early datings based only on the crudeness of work; the presence of treflée crosses would indicate a later date, probably in the Gothic period.
