Baptismal font perhaps from the workshop of Simon of Cologne. Described in Orive Salazar (1975). Calzada Toledano (2000) studies the iconographic program of this font in the context of the influence of the 'Biblia pauperum' and he identifies the following scenes as represented around the basin sides: 1)baptism of Christ; 2)temptations of Christ; 3)resurrection of Lazarus; 4)transfiguration of Christ; 5)Mary Magdalen's repentance; 6)Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem; 7)Last Supper; 8)Christ at Gethsemane with Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. The font is described again, following Calzada Toledano's notes, in Rilova Pérez and Simón Rey (2005). On-site notes: an extremely beautiful late-Gothic font from ca. 1490 in a disastrous state of repair; the soft sandstone is very worn -as if it had been exposed to the elements for a long time- and with much damage to different parts of it [NB: some of the Burgos fonts, when moved, we were told, had been rolled on their sides from one location to another!]. It consists of a hemispherical basin mounted on a very short base, looking somewhat like two of the fonts in the Santander area [cf. Index entries for Bareyo and Santoña]. There are scrolls with inscriptions at the rim; the sides of the basin have large arches containing scenes, one of which appears to be the baptism of Christ; another Christ with Mary Magdalene; the base is polygonal and appears to be ornamented with animals [NB: we were not permitted proper access to the font during our visit, nor were we allowed to photograph it in detail or take measurements; furthermore, the custodians were not willing to give us another date for a proper study of this font -- this has been a common problem in accessing fonts in the archdiocese of Burgos. The liturgical patrimony of the province has been decimated by theft and mismanagement. Although some sources at the archbishopric have blamed the bulk of the damage on outsiders (e.g.: the notorious "Eric, the Belgian"), the reality appears to be that much of the theft and mismanagement is a local problem which has involved some of the priests and municipal authorities themselves, as well as other locals, as recent cases made well-known by the press have demonstrated. In a recent case, September 2003, a local of Aranda de Duero was caught red-handed by the Guardia Civil having stolen the holy-water stoup from the Ermita de Ucero, near Burgo de Osma, in nearby Soria]. [cf. Index entry for Sasamón No. 2 for a Romanesque baptismal font kept in this same location]
