human figure - grotesque or fantastic - siren
Scene Description: seen here between the quadruped on the left and the dancer on the right -- notice the large damage area by the upper rim; the drilled hole for the metal anchor is clearly visible; it is likely that the expansion of metal anchor due to very cold temperature broke the stone, a common occurrence observed in old fonts

Church Notes: the church of S. Pedro in Albacastro was disused for a long time; renovated in 2009 -- The former iglesia de San Esteban in Burgos has been renamed Museo del Retablo and is used as a museum of religious art for the city of Burgos
The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 1 February 2021] notes: "La pila bautismal románica, de gran interés, con decoración de los Reyes Magos, está ahora en la parroquia de la Sagrada Familia de Burgos". [NB: later moved to the Museo del Retablo, Burgos -- cf. infra]. Described in Bilbao (1996). Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ). One of several fonts, this one originally from the Iglesia de San Pedro Apostol in Albacastro, now kept at the Museo del Retablo in the Iglesia de San Esteban, in the city of Burgos. The bucket-shaped basin has an upper band of circles just below the upper rim, followed down by a second band, this one with crosses and floral motifs; below, nine irregular arches, some have framed lower ends, each arch containing a scene or figure: six human figures in different positions, a female dancer, a siren or harpy, a lion passant, a lion next to a man that holds a cock or hen. The arcade in which these scenes, figures, etc., reside is a very flexible affair; where often a triple arcade is reserved as central focus for a particular meaningful scene, here it is occupied by a passant lion; the columns are equally malleable: non existent in the merman/mermaid and dancer grouping, almost vanished to the left of it, triplicated still farther to the left, between the two book-carrying figures, etc.; some of the arches have parallel arch-heads at the bottom, creating thus a full frame for the figures included, as is the case in the orant figure, and those on the left and right of it. The Enciclopedia… (Ibid.) notes the similarity of this font with the one at nearby Valtierra de Albacastro, and adscribes it to the same carver; it also points out similarities with the fonts at Valcobero, Renedo de Valdavia, Moarves de Ojeda. There is no cover present but there is evidence of metal staples from the old cover in the rim; one side badly damaged where the metal staple split the stone.
