On-site notes: chalice-shaped baptismal font, the work of Spanish sculptor Diego de Siloé (1495-1563). The delicate work -some have called it fastidious- looks like 'appliqué' and covers the sides of the basin; the ornamentation consists of four main motifs in shields made of curly tape: Agnus Dei, pair of keys, crossed, vase with flowers and chalice with worm or snake on it, all of them framed in pairs of dragon-like beasts, curled tape and other ornamentation; the centre ring is an elaborate belt of laurel (?) leaves; below this wreath-like moulding; the base has a fluted pattern with inserts. There are two repaired spots at the upper rim, apparently at the places where the original staples of the lid were, and probably caused damage by splitting the stone, a common occurrence; hinges evident in the rim. No cover present.
