Church Notes: Romanesque church; modified 15th and 16thC
The entry for this church in Oscar M. Ruiz Pérez' Cantabria Románica [www.cantabriaromanica.com] reports and illustrates: "una pila bautismal que creemos es muy posterior a los siglos románicos, y que según nos dijo el guardés, proviene de un despoblado cercano." The present font, said to have been recovered from a nearby abandoned hamlet, is indeed much later than the church itself and may be a composite of two pieces, a hemispherical basin with a thin roll moulting at the upper rim and plain sides and underbowl, raised on a baluster-type pedestal base with large scrolled leaves on the sides. [NB: we have no information on the font of the medieval church here.
