Described in Ruiz Maldonado (1989); in Hernando Garrido (1993) and in García Guinea (1998). Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996). In the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002-) where the font is described as one of the most interesting specimens in the province, and is related to those Cantoral de la Peña, Payo de Ojeda and Respenda de Aguilar, in the same area, with a date in the 13th century. The basin is bucket-shaped, made of sandstone; the lower base on which it now stands is modern; it has a loose braid of beaded-tape around the upper basin side, floral motifs inside the open spaces of the braid; the lower end of the basin has a crenellated border motif; in between, a number of scenes and figures which Hernando Garrido [cf. supra] describes as lacking coherence or a narrative line ["inconexas y deshilvanadas"], and describes the quality of the work as crude and flat, related to the style found in the fonts at Valcobero and Cantoral de la Peña. Hernando Garrido (ibid.) does, however, add that the scenes may be united by the theme of salvation through baptism by opposing the salvific action of the latter to the baseness of the carnality represented on the scenes; he also argues that the blame for some of the colourful licenses taken by the artist may be laid on the back of the theologically-challenged local clergy of the time (ibid.) On-site notes: very good state of repair of the font, but plinth is modern; the imagery on he basin includes a fornication scene in the presence of servants, another scene of two women being attacked or bitten by snakes, a joust or combat between two mounted knights arbitrated by a woman [a scene identified in several sources as 'tregua domini'], another scene in which a musician plays in front of a woman; iron staples from the old cover still evident in the rim. Noted and illustrated in Martín Jiménez (2008).
