The new cathedral, though started in the 1520s, did not see its consecration until 1768 at which time it was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and to St. Frutos, as the ambulatory's stone inscription reads (Ruiz Hernando, 1995, p.9ff.)

Described and illustrated in Ruiz Hernando (1995: 88-89): the late Gothic pedestal font was brought from the old cathedral to the new, and is now located in the Capilla de Santa Bárbara, which serves as the parish church. The font is made of a tan marble and has a polygonal basin, pedestal and base, while the ring which connects basin with the pedestal is rounded and covered in vegetal ornamentation. The sides of the basin are divided into pairs of arches containing animal and leaf motifs; the exception is the undivided front side which bears the coat of arms of Castile and the pomegranates that are the emblem of king Henry IV [the font is said to have been donated to the cathedral by king Enrique IV, king of Castile & Leon, 1425-1474]. There is a wooden lid of later manufacture
