Listed in Martín González (1972) as a noteworthy baptismal font of the 16th century. Described in Wattenberg Garcia (1997) as a baptismal font of the 16th century with figural and symbolic ornamentation; located in the Museo de Valladolid with Inv. No. 10630. [NB: a fragment of a font of the same type but unknown provenance is also housed at this museum -- not listed in this Index until further info becames available]. Information and more images of this font are available as well in the web site www.melgardearriba.com/arteycultura/pila_bautismal.php [accessed April 2003. Noted in Philippus II Rex (1998) as a baptismal font housed in the Museo Nacional de Escultura, in Valladolid. A late font with lush ornamentation is visible at the bottom of the main stairwell at the interior of the Palacio de Fabio Nelli, which houses the museum. The baptismal font consists of a massive roughly hemispherical basin raised on a squat round-to-square lower base; the basin has a row of pointed motif at the upper rim, with a row of cherub heads below; the broad band below a thin rope moulding contains two large wreath-like garlands with a hatted human head inscribid in them; to the sides of the round garlands the area is populated by putti, some winged, some not, as well as scrolling tape and floating heads; at the underbowl is a row of foliage; atop the base is a moulding, and the corners of the square part are decorated with triton-like heads, the bodies mere scrolls trailing along the sides. There are two metal staples from an old font cover at opposite ends of the upper rim, but no cover present. The museum plaque does not inform which of the two churches of Melgar de Arriba (San Miguel / Santiago) the font comes from.
