Square baptismal font (Rios Gonzalez, 1997). The object is quadrangular [rectangular?] and devoid of ornamentation on the basin, just plain sides, and badly damaged; repaired with cement (?); th quadrangular basin stands on a block of such form, but it is not clear whether this was originally part of it. A local source [information received via e-mail from Daniel Garcia de la Cuesta] reports two interesting details on this base stone: the rendering of a quadruped, possibly an elephant [cum grano salis], and a possible inscription on it [illegible?]. García de Castro Valdés (2000) notes other quadrangular fonts of the period in Beloncio, Santa Maria de Villanueva de Valdecarzana, San Isidoro de Leon; the fonts at Gormaz and San Julian de Bustasurm, perhaps of the 12th century [after Garcia Guinea (1996)]; the one at San Prudencio de Armentia in the 12th century [after Bilbao 1994]; the fonts at Soto de Bureba, Santillan del Agua, San Miguel de Rosales, Santa Maria de Dosante and San Andres de Quintanillabon, in either the late-12th or early 13th-century [after Bilbao (1996)]; and the later Navarrese ones in the 13th century in Ripodas y Turrillas [after Domeño (1992)] [cf. Index entries for these fonts]
