Illustrated in Carbonell i Esteller ([s.d.]). Described and illustrated in Catalunya romànica (1984- ); probably from a Benedictine monastery, this font is supposed to share the Lombardic influence present in the rest of the sculptural ornamentation seen throughout the church; the sides of the font bear the following ornamentation [L-->R]: 1)hieratic male figure with a bird on either side on the ground; 2)lion, appears to be biting its own leg; 3)foliage or plant; 4)hieratic male figure under and arch; 5)torsade column; 6)Tree of life (?); 7)hieratic male figure under an arch, showing palms forward; 8)torsade column; 9)large palm leaf; 10)torsade column; 11)hieratic male figure under an arch, left hand to middle, right hand to chest; 12)quatrefoil acanthus arrangement; 13)hieratic male figure, both hands to middle; the head is missing but the letters alpha and omega appear to the right of his head; 14)quatrefoil acanthus arangement; 15)fight scenes: bearded figure on the left holds a sword in the right hand about to strike; his left hand holds the victim (?) by the hair; the figure on the right appears to be male as well; holds something on the left hand (?); 16)hieratic male figure under an arch. the right hand raised in benediction while the hand holds a large key [St. Peter?]; 17) hieratic male figure under an arch, hands down with open palms showing; a thick rope moulding frames the bottom of the basin side. Bilbao (1996) identifies the figure with the palms of the hands facing front as St. John the Baptist before Salome]. The underbowl is round and chamfered, and has another rope moulding about half way down. Catalunya romànica (ibid.) dates the work towards the middle of the 12th century and does not offer an explanation or interpretation of the iconographic program on the font. This same source (ibid.) reports the presence of an inscription, the letters MNA, on the basin but suggests that it may have been added at a later date. From a time unknown the font had been half-built into a wall; in the late 1940s it was brought out to its present position [NB: local information at Sant Joan refers that the font had an upper rope moulding at the rim; this moulding disappeared ca. 1700]. Noted and illustrated in La Garrotxa (2005) with date towards the middle of the 12th century. Amoraga has a monographic article on this font [unpublished? 2009? Source: www.circuloromanico.com] in which she agrees with the identification of the two bearded humans as the Sacrifice of Isaac; the hieratic figure she interprets as Christ after the Resurrection, and the inscription as 'EMNA' followed by the alpha and omega, as 'Emmanuel, beginning and end. Amoraga (ibid.) relates this font to the one at Beuda, which, the author states, is made of the same type of stone. [NB: the new parish church in Sant Joan les Fonts is 19th-century].
