Church Notes: Sant Martin is a single-nave church located in the outskirts of the village (there is another church, Era Mare de Diu deth Roser, in the main square), at the side of the road leading to Arros and Vila. The public fountain of the village has a beautiful chrismon with the figure of a bishop, probably recycled from elsewhere. A frontal of a paleochristian sarcophagus is embedded in the village fountain (ACTUR, 1999, p.5). The reference in Catalunya romànica (1984- , v. xiii: 445) points out that the chrismon shows an inverted "S" and that the bishop depicted on the left of it is rather schematic. The origin of this object is not known, although -this last source suggests- it may have come from the village church.
Font Notes:
Described in Durliat (1978): the large cylindrical basin has three rope mouldings at the lower side and underbowl, and rests on a base made up of a central column with attached half-columns; the lower base is ornamented with ball motif. Described and illustrated in Catalunya romànica (1984- ), where it is dated to the late 12th or early 13th century. Noted in Amiell (2007). The font has a pyramidal cover that looks like the one at Gausac, also in the Val d'Aran [NB: we have no information about the inside of this cover; the one at Gausac -cf. Index entry for Gausac- is a Gothic one, beautifully painted on the inside]
