The articles in Catalunya romànica (1984- ) describe, discuss and illustrate the font and the ornamentation program in detail but they shy away from any attempt at interpreting the program other than to suggest that the figures might refer to St. Martin himself, patron saint of this church [NB: programs of this type have been found in French fonts of about the same period just across the border in the Haute-Garonne, for example, or in the Hautes-Alpes, area around Briançon; there is nothing here that particularly harks back at the legend of this saint]. Described in Mestre i Godes (1999) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period; the cylindrical basin is ornamented with human figures and vegetal motifs. Noted in Amiell (2007). On-site notes: motifs from left to right: 1)artist with his tools [the carver of the font?] under a round arch; column and spandrel with fleur de lis; 2)fleur de lis with human head above, under a round arch; fleur de lis in the spandrel [end of arcade]; 3)male clerical figure with baculum in his left hand, the right points is very close to the fleur de lis in the previous spandrel; 4)mounted knight with lance and oval shield ending in a point below rides towards the left; 5)the whole back of the font, like the one at Escunyau, is covered with non-figural motifs, in this case a beatiful vine with three 5-point and one 6-point stars in its twirls. The base is a plain cylindrical pedestal. The font has a truncated-cone cover made of wood, of the type Bond (1908) calls "rim buffet"; it looks quite dull on the outside but, when opened, has beautiful angels painted in the most brilliant hues of gold, blue, yellow, red, etc.; these articulated covers painted on the inside are not an unknown occurence in the alpine areas of France, but it is the only one we found in this valley. Noted in ACTUR (1999: 4) with a mixed-up message: "A romanesque baptism tub though the church itself is Gothic" (!). The shape of the shield, the fleurs-de-lis, etc., are suggestive of at least the 13th century.
