Scene Description: at some point it may have been the front side because it was altered to house the lock of the font cover, regardless of the damage done to the original carving -- notice the multi-lobe, shell-like shape of the underbowl, which may suggest a date into the 13th century [cf. Fernández Sánchez (1992) shows a quadrangular basin with two rows of encircled rosettes of various types; one of the visible corners has a figure carved on the angle; the other visible corner appears to have a face on it; the caption accompanying the illustration identifies the base as modern and reads "Pila bautismal del s. VIII" [=baptismal font of the 8th century], an unlikely dating for a font quite similar to other Romanesque fonts of the area firmly dated to the 12th or 13th centuries, although several other popular sources describe it as "Visigothic". Not so in Catalunya romànica (1984- ), where the font is dated to the late 12th or 13th century; the basin is quadrangular, with a set of encircled motifs arranged into two registers on the sides: the upper register is made up of three sets of five encircled wheels with 11 to 14 radii, plus one set of four such on the fourth side [the need to accommodate the corner head reduced the space on this side]; the lower register has three sets of encircled floral motifs, most of them 4-petal, but the left one on each of the sides varies its number up to 8-petal; the fourth side of this register has palm leaves instead; the corners of the basin have two encircled potent Greek crosses at the back, one on each side, and two human figures in the front corners: one is a full orant figure, the other just a head, both in a niche. The motifs are described in this -and other- source as of the Visigothic type but, unlike some sources which immediately jump to date this font to the Visigothic period, this source points out that these motifs lasted in Spain until well into the 15th century, and that the font belongs most probably in the late 12th or early 13th century. The underbowl of the basin is plain but the surface is actually multilobed, which may suggest a dating into the 13th century. The pedestal base is a modern replacement.
