Described in Garcia Guinea (1979) and illustrated in his later work (1996): the basin is roughly hemispherical, somewhat elongated along the vertical axis and decorated with concave ribs the bottom 1/3 of which have convex rib inserts; it is raised on a cylindrical stem and a rounded lower base, both plain. No cover present. Noted in García de Castro Valdés ([s.d.] 1998?). The entry for this church in Oscar M. Ruiz Pérez' Cantabria Románica [www.cantabriaromanica.com] notes: "La pila de Santa María la Mayor de Navamuel en [...] Valderredible, gallonada y de buenas dimensiones se ubica además en un baptisterio construido en un anejo que esconde la portada original de la Iglesia." The state of the basin appears crudely rendered in parts, but it may be due to damage to the upper 2/3, since the inserts in the lower concave ribbing appears quite regular' the short pedestal base is plain. No cover present.
