Additional Comments: Visited the village but the priest who had the key was not there. The other person who had a second key had died. Visit it again next time. -- Second visit (blood, sweat and tears! but M managed to get in after an hour-long plea -- H thinks some connection with other works -- perhaps same artist or workshop -- to be followed up + write-out) -- DVD with photos and write-up sent to churchwarden [Maria Luisa Cofreces -- c/Cantarranas, 4 -- Robladillo de Ucieza - PALENCIA - Spain] on 22 November 2005 -- load of cobblers about not permitting access to the font recently: where did Kroesne & Steensma get their pics from?

Listed in Sancho Campo (1971). Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996) and in García Guinea (1998): baptismal font of the Romanesque period [G-G (ibid.) suggests late 12th or early 13th century ["ya casi del siglo XIII"]]. Martín Jiménez (2008), too, suggests the 13th century. On-site notes: bucket-shaped basin adorned with scenes [L->R]: a siren of long mane and prominent bust has a double tail with a marked incision for the sex at the juncture of the tails -- a figure that appears to be a Spinario -- two gowned and bearded humans facing each other, perhaps embracing -- a crouching devil (?) appears to be in chains and its left arm is held up by the next figure -- a cleric, perhaps a bishop (?) holds up the devil's left arm with his right hand, while the left hand holds a large baculum -- three devils, one with a beak-head appear to be engaged in a fight -- a centaur armed with bow and arrow. All these figures are framed by a running garland at the bottom and another at the top' the body of the top garland is clearly a snake head above the siren. The scene has been identified in one of the sources as a Harrowing of Hell. Large centre ring and quadrangular lower base. Kroesen & Steensma (2004) relate some of the scenes on this font to those on the font at Colmenares de Ojeda; these last authors identify the two-tailed siren with female lust and add: "just as clear is the representation of male lust -- a nude man with heavily emphasized genitals."
