Font Notes:
Baptismal font dated to the 14th century in the Patrimonio Artistico de España (Martin Gonzalez, 1977-). Described in Bilbao (1996.) and in García Guinea (1998) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period; the rim has profused ornamentation; the basin sides have a dragon being attacked by two warriors, three male figures holding objects in their hands and a battle scene between two monstrous animals; the base is plain. Bilbao (ibid. mentions the possibility that these three figures may be clerics ["hombres de Iglesia"] whose function may be related to the dispensation of baptism. The Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002-), which dates the font towards the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century, points out the thematic common places with the programs on the fonts at Cantoral de la Peña, Rebanal de las Llantas and Valcobero, in the same area; this same source notes that the iconographic program of this font does not appear to constitute a narrative, but rather it gives the sense of being a selection of samples from the carver's own visual experience or items taken from a book of models. Noted in Martín Jiménez (2008). There is no cover present but the side of the font against the back wall has a large church missing from the upper rim, an indication that it was damaged by the metal anchorings of an earlier cover.
