view of church exterior in context - churchyard, cemetery
Scene Description: this cemetery wall is all that remains of the ancient parish church of San Martín de Villusto, whence the present font in the parish church of Santa María of Villusto came from; the cemetery wall stones are believed to have been part of disappeared church -- San Martin was a parish for three of the seven 'barrios' that constituted Villuso

Described in Bilbao (1996: 299 et al) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period; the basin, of large size and depth, is decorated with rope motif and an inscription that reads in part "IN ERA MCLXV" (Ibid., p. 254), [i.e., "era" year 1165 = 1127 A.D.], although Bilbao (ibid. : 40, 254) reads it as 1157 (?); this inscription includes the name "Martinus" [was he the master?, the commissioner?] and gives the reigning monarch as "ADEFONSUS IMPERATOR IN CASTELLA ET IN LEONE ET IN TOLETO [...]", which Bilbao adscribes to Alfonso VII (ibid.) [cf. infra for the Enciclopedia revision of the date to betwen 1147 and 1157]. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 17 June 2021] notes: "iglesia dedicada [a] Santa María y es renacentista en cabecera [...] [NB: this source does not give details of the earlier font or its supposed origin/provenance]. IN CASTELLA ET IN LEONE ET IN TOLETO ET IN BAEZA ET ALMERIA MARTINUS...
The entry for Villusto in Wikipedia [https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villusto] [accessed 17 June 2021] notes: "Pila bautismal del la Iglesia de Santa María [...] (314)".
