Font Notes:
Listed in Pérez Carmona (1974). Frontón Simón (1994) traces the Silos influence on this font. Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996.) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ), which suggests similarities with the font at Cueva Gardiel. The large bucket-shaped basin has an arcade of fifteen arches in which can be found: a male siren accompanied by a monstrous wading bird with long neck and legs, a reptilian tail and a strangely shaped head; a centaur appears about to shoot an arrow from its bow at the siren; a well-carved Annunciation scene follows, one figure in a separate arch: Mary is represented full front with both hands opened before her chest; she is dressed in a tunic and closed mantle, her head covered in a short veil that falls over her shoulders; to her right is Gabriel, turned slightly toward her and smiling to the viewer; the large index finger of his right hand points to Mary while his left hand holds a large flower sceptre; his hair is curled and his tunic is held by a clasp; the next arches contain six figures [Apostles?], among whom, Peter (holding keys) and Paul (holding sword) among them; the next one is occupied by an equestrian monarch, a crown on his head, armed with raised sword and shield; next come a scene that contains a standing knight, wearing a helm and protected by a shield, stabbing a rampant lion in its belly. The basin rests directly on a large circular plinth. On-site notes: the font is in an appalling state and the repairs made are dreadfully crude; the damage on the upper rim is consistent with the removal of the iron staples of the old cover. [NB: it appears that the earlier repairs were smoothed over between our first visit in June 1999 and 2015, as the later-date photographs show].
