Church Notes: the location of this parish church is odd; it is adjacent to the monastic church of the Monasterio de Santa María la Real, itself built on the original Romanesque monastery of the 11thC(?) dedicated to St. Vincent; the parish church is 16thC but the font is late-Romanesque and must have been originally in the monastic church

Listed in Pérez Carmona (1974). Described in Bilbao (1996) and in Valle Barreda. Baptismal font of the Romanesque period; the basin, ribbed on the inside, is decorated with a nice arcade of tall columns and narrow round arches with human faces, birds and palmettes in the spandrels; the pedestal base is cylindrical without ornamentation; the lower base is circular and ornamented with decorated mouldings. The Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ) notes the fonts at Cojobar, Madrigal del Monte, Mecerreyes, Zalduendo, Tornadijo, Valdorros, Villamayor de los Montes and Mazariegos as sharing design, ornamentation and dating at the late-12th or early 13th century On-site notes: the usual damage to the upper basin where the iron staples of the cover have been removed; damage also to the lower base mouldings; the upper surface of the basin has palmettes in the spandrels of the concave circle; the circular lower base has graded mouldings that are decorated in part with checkered pattern, tiny medallions, etc., all badly damaged now. The concave rinned pattern on the inside of the basin suggests a later date in the Romanesque period or even an earlier one in the Gothic. No cover present.
