Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in the NE corner of the nave
Century and Period: 13th century (mid-to-late?), Early Gothic
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Westphalian tub-font [Drake]
Cognate Fonts: Marienkirche at Nesse [cf. FontNotes]
Church Notes: church date ca. 1200; "Granitquaderkirche" i.e., made of ashlar blocks of granite
Described and illustrated in Kroesen & Steensma (2004) as a baptismal font of Baumberg sandstone, which they compare and contrast with the one at Sillenstede: "In Middels [the figures] are lively and sometimes even dramatic [... in the crucifixion...] the Virgin is collapsing in sorrow and being caught by St. John [... in the Descent into Hell...] Christ is an extremely active figure who has thrown the devil to the ground with his left foot and is shoving the pole of the victory banner into his jaws [...] He is also pulling Adam up from hell, who puts his foot on the head of the devil. Even the rocks of the gates of Hell have been drawn into the whole composition by a twist in the other direction." Drake notes: "One of the Westfalian tub fonts. Harrowing of Hell shown and it has the Crucifixion, Baptism of Christ and -I think- Christ's Resurrection" [source: description and archive photograph courtesy of C.S Drake [letter to BSI of 26 August 1998]]. On-site noted: the one-volume font is practically cylindrical, with a very slight tapering in towards the bottom; there is no drainage inside the basin; there is a squat base or plinth, plain and narrower than the bottom of the basin; appears modern. The font has no cover proper, but a metal baptismal dish is in use, a common occurrence in the north. There are, as suggested above, four scenes on the sides of the font [L->R]: 1)Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, with the Baptist, the angel holding ckothes, and the dove above Christ's head; 2)Crucifixion, with, beneath the arms of the cross, Longinus (?) to the right and, a robed figure to the left [NB: the upper part of the robed figure is damaged but it appears to be a woman; perhaps Mary Magdalene?]; on the extreme the left of the scene is John holding in his arms a swooning Mary; 3)Resurrection; Christ, in orant position, rises from the tomb between two attending angels; in the foregorund, at the level of the tomb, two armed soldiers sleep head-to-toe; 4)Harrowing of Hell, as described above, packed with action and figures; beautiful detail of a fleur-de-lis hinge from the doors of Hell. A beautifully rendered acanthus vine runs around the upper sides of the basin, populated with all kinds of beasts and [semi?] humans. The font, considering its age, is in a reasonable state of repair, and is still used for baptisms with the use of a modern metal insert atop. No cover present.
