Described in Bilbao (1996). Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period; the roughly hemispherical basin is ribbed inside and out and has a band of foliage and circular motifs half way down; the ribbed pattern continues below this band onto the underbowl; the base is modern. The crude wooden cover is flat and round; modern. Given the concave ribbing around the inner basin sides, it is likely that the font was a a later date than assigned in Bilbao and the Enciclopedia.. [cf. supra], more probably in the Gothic period. The fonts at Arcellares del Toro, Basconcillos del Tozo and Pedrosa de Valdelucio are given as cognates. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 18 March 2021] reports the present church as mid-16th century and notes: "la pila bautismal era románica con decoración rectilínea y gallones en el interior y se desintegró sin posibilidad de reparación, por lo que ha sido sustituid por una más sencilla, triangular con decoración, con pie cilíndrico ancho y base cuadrada." A photograph of the old font [http://elpasiego.blogspot.ca/2012/07/el-tozo-2.html] [accessed 9 August 2013] dated 4 July 2012 shows the font altogether, but clearly with parts cemented in rather crudely. This font was found broken into several pieces, on 16 February 2013 according a document [cf. ImagesArea]. [NB: is it possible that the cement just failed to keep it together, or was it an act of vandalism? The document (ibid.) states that the breakage was caused by flaws inherent in the block of sandstone, not to human intervention] [NB: at the time, 2013, BSI received information that the local parish priest was designing a new font of triangular shape [cf. attached documents in ImagesArea] -- In 2021 BSI received confirmation of the creation of a new font designed by the parish priest ca. 2013 and executed by the Burgos stone mason Jorge Ortega].
