Described in Bilbao (1996). The Enciclopedia del románico en La Rioja (2008) notes that similar inscriptions are found on the fonts at Grañón and Santurde, in Rioja, and those at Barbadillo de Herrera [sic], Eterna and Fresnedo de la Sierra [sic], in Burgos province. [i.e., Fresneda de la Sierra Tiron and Barbadillo de los Herreros]. On-site notes: large hemispherical has a broad band all around the side bearing an ondulating vine; a narrow band under it contains an inscription; the underbowl has broad and very deeply-carved ribbed pattern; the inside of the basin well is patterned with eight very large concave ribs, making it poly-lobulated; the upper rim of the basin has notches at opposite ends of the surface, probably from the iron staples of an old cover; the base is a round pedestal with large roll mouldings at each end; appears to be a later replacement. Bilbao (ibid.) mentions blind arches on the lower base [which is the lower roll moulding; they look more like scallops. Noted in Valle Barreda (2009) as similar to the fonts at Neila and Huerta de Abajo. Inscription transcribed in Palomero, et al. [www.sierradelademanda.com/docftp/ds23BarbadilloHer.pdf] [accessed 28 December 2013]: "“+ MAT (ri)S . PECCATV (m) : NOBIS : AB ORIGINE : NATV(m) : HOC : E(st) : ABLATV(m) : PENIT(us) : (quo)QVE : FONTE FVGA(tum):”. (El pecado, nacido por nuestro origen materno, ha sido borrado y completamente ahuyentado en esta fuente) Parece una obra realizada en torno al año 1185. Dimensiones, diámetro 118 ; altura 104 cms" [NB: it should be noted that the inner well concave rib pattern is more likely to suggest a later date that offered above; this type of pattern usually occers in the 13th-century and later].
