Church Notes: documentary evidence on the church at Baranda exists by 1272, but the church is probably older
Font Notes:
Described with some measurements in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Plain somewhat irregular square basin with tapering sides; square inner basin; there are two drilled holes in the upper rim, probably for the staples of the old cover; the basin rests now directly on the ground, but would have needed a base or plinth originally [cf. ImagesArea for an object that may have been the base of the font]. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 2022] notes: "Su iglesia está dedicada al Salvador y es de una sola nave, sencilla [...] La pila de bautismo es cuadrada y lisa" [cf. infra]. No entry found for this village in the Enciclopedia del románico [www.romanicodigital.com]. [NB: the village website [http://www.telefonica.net/web2/barandademontija/iglesia.htm] [accessed 24 June 2010] includes an appeal (2006?) in which on-going repairs to the church are shown; the font had been moved from its original position to the porch, until the flooring inside can be repaired -- our early photographs show the font still in the porch in early May 2010; later photographs taken in 2021 show the font completely re-carved.
