Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Described and partially illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ). The font consists of a hemispherical basin decorated with a broad-rib pattern on the outside; the upper rim retains one of the metal staples of an old cover, but the one on the opposite side has been lost and the damage to the rim on the spot is now showing; it is raised on a round pedestal pillar around which a snake and a lion are engaged in a fight; the lower base has a broad roll moulting atop a square lower volume with ball motif at the corners [NB: the font may have been moved to the present location from where it was originally set, as there is another location that still retains the round plinth of which the font originall stood [cf. ImagesArea]. The Enciclopedia… (ibid.) suggests similarities with the fonts at Grijalba, Villegas, Villamayor de Treviño, La Piedra, Villasandino, Rebolledo de Traspeña y Los Valcárceres. There is a wooden cover on the ground, behind the font; it appears wooden, falt, plain and modern.
