Additional Comments: is this really a modern replica font?
Font Notes:
Illustrated in Lojendio-Rodriguez (1985). The font consists of a large hemispherical basin; raised on a short cylindrical base of equal quality of execution. Bilbao (1996) states that it is a mid-20th century replica of a Romanesque font [NB: the object referred to in Bilbao may not be this baptismal font but a quatrefoil holy-water stoup that according to some local claims, dates to the Visigothic period -- the object appears made up of a quatrefoil basin and a quadrangular pedestal base decorated with odd themes and motifs, some of which appear genuine, whether a replica or not, perhaps re-used materials? The Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ), in its entry for 'Puente-Arenas' describes and illustrates two stone fragments (capitals?) found in a dove-cote in Puente-Arenas with some carvings difficult to interpret, one of which might even represent a baptism; these are the same capitals reported in 1956 by Perez Carmona as being used as support for a holy-water stoup. The Enciclopedia… (ibid.) does not give a definite date for them but it suggests a Romanesque dating likely].
