Stone font here described and illustrated in García Guinea (1979) and (1996) after Crozet's study of 1966 that dated it to the end of the 12th century [G-G reproduces most of Crozet's drawings of the font in his 1996 book]. Described as a Romanesque baptismal font with man-eating lions around the base in Guerra (1986 c1978: 82). On-site notes: beautiful font of the late 12th or early 13th century with some of the original (?) polychromy still on the sides of the short, wide and tetralobed basin; the base is made of two large lions. The inside of the basin has concave ribs, like fluting; on the outside, one side has a lovely intricate interlacing worthy of a Norman font, while the other is covered in large palmettes, all of it deeply carved on a turquoise-green painted background. The base is also wide and short and is made up of a pair of man-eating lions. The Bareyo church is one of the jewels of the Cantabrian Romanesque (Karlsson, 1989, p. 53-54 with ill.) There are two other Romanesque baptismal fonts of such quality and importance in the area, those at Santoña and Santillana del Mar. [NB: if the concave pattern of the inner basin here is original, and not a later modification, the dating of this font may need to be moved forward towards the 13th and even 14th period, despite the outer carvings]
