Bilings (1846) notes a modern division at the west end of the nave; "In this is placed the font, with a lofty canopied cover of debased Gothic, but good in its general effect." Noted in Fordyce (1857) as a font "with a lofty canopied cover of debased Gothic" located in a modern wooden partition in the western en of the nave. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. Bond (1908) mentions its cover, "a fine Post-Reformation cover of Jacobean detail but Gothic design", similar to the ones at Durham Cathedral and at Brancepeth. Bond makes no mention of the font itself. Ditto Pevsner (1983): "Font cover. A spectacular piece of Cosin-Gothic [i.e., John Cosin, bishop of Durham 1660-1672] [...], spire-like and entirely Dec, obviously a version of the larger side canopies of the Sedgefield screen [...] with most of the ornament ironed out. Strengthened in 1972 by Pace's [i.e., G.G. Pace] four iron supports, more heavy-handed than those at Brancepeth."
