Described in Mackenzie & Ross (1834): "the font is curiously sculpted with fighting dragons, festoons of roses, &c." Whellan (1894) writes: "The original church, of which there are few remains, dates from about 1220. The old baptismal font, with its sculptured dragons and festoons of flowers, &c., has been preserved, together with a portion of a Saxon cross and a fourteenth century tomb-cover." Murray (1873) notes: "The font, sculptured with dragons, is curious". Cox a& Harvey (1907) described it as the best of the Norman fonts in Durham; curiously sculptured with dragons. Pevsner (1983), however, comments that this curious font looks "more C17 than medieval", and that "it seems to go with the pews".
