There is a multiple entry that includes Kirkby [Malham] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SD8960/kirkby-malham/] [accessed 22 January 2023]; it mentions neither cleric nor church in it, despite its name [Chirchebi]. The Archaeological Journal (December 1844: 393) notes: "Mr. Jackson reports that a font of beautiful workmanship is lying unnoticed and nearly covered with grass in Kirkby Malhamdale church-yard. It is used for mixing up lime for whitewash, with which the arches and pillars of the church are periodically bedaubed." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Home (1908) mentions a Norman font here as well [NB: C&H and Home use spelling 'Kirby Malham']. Morris (1932) mentions a remarkable font from the Transitional period in this church. Noted in Betjeman (1958) as a font of the Transitional period [i.e., 1150-1200]. Pevsner (1986 c1967) writes: "Font. Primitive, circular, probably C12." David Tippey, of www.KirkbyMalham.info, has provided us information on this font: "There are two fonts, an 11th C Norman one which was rescued from a farmyard and replaced in the church when it was restored in the late 19th century [1889-90], and its later replacement, which now stands by the entrance and is used as a planter." [e-mail communication from David Tippey, 4/8/2000]. The Norman font is now mounted on a square pedestal of Victorian date; the font is almost cylindrical, slightly narrower at the top; the upper sides of the basin appear plain; towards the bottom it has a double moulding and a double band of saw-tooth motif; the lower end has two volumes: the upper one is a moulding, still round, like the basin; the lower one is plain but square, accommodating angle motifs [spurs] from the upper volume. The wooden lid is late 20th century. A similar font can be found at Birstall, also in Yorkshire. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SD8940060997] notes: "Parish Church, late C15, restored 1879 to 81 [...] C11 font in baptistry with two bands of zigzag moulding on C19 base." [cf. Index entry for Kirkby Malham No. 2 for a polygonal basin also in this church]
