Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary's Church, Over Silton. Dating in parts to the 12th century, this church is strangely located as the village which originally surrounded it is no longer in existence. It now serves neighbouring villages."

Scene Description: Source caption: "The church predates the present village. The village it was built to serve is between the present location and newer village across the field to the west. The lost village remains as a series of humps and bumps."

There is an entry for [Over] Silton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE4593/over-silton/] [accessed 5 December 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Norman period here. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "The building dates from the 12th century, to which period the nave belongs, but the only detail of this date remaining is the fine south doorway. [...] The plain small font is of the 12th century. Round the upper edge of the bowl, which has chamfered angles and is also chamfered below, are two flat fillets tooled in herring-bone fashion." Noted in Morris (1931): "Small, unusual 12th-cent. font." The Hill Side Villages North Yorkshire [www.thirsk.org.uk/silton/churches.html][404 error now] notes a "12th century or earlier font of simple beauty". Not mentioned in Pevsner (1985). The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE4560493166] notes; "Church. C12, C14, C15 and C19. [...] Font: heavy C17 font has chamfered square base and tapering banded shaft supporting chamfered square bowl."
