There is an entry for this Foston [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SE6965/foston/] [accessed 28 August 2014]; a church is reported in it, but it is not clear whether it existed before 1086 or not [NB: the present building is usually dated to the 12th century]. The present font is described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Morris (1931) notes a "circular, probably Norm[an] font." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "There was a church in Foston in 1086 in the fee of Count Alan. [...] The earliest portions of the existing building date from the first half of the 12th century and include most of the outer walls of the present structure. [...] The church was restored in the last century"; no font mentioned in it. The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: SE6990865170] (1954) notes: "C12 circular font on pillar and C12 pillar piscina with small square fluted bowl on cable-moulded necking set on octagonal stem with chevron ornamentation". The font itself is quite simple, a crudely rendered round basin narrower on the lower half, raised on a plain cyilindrical base that appears to be of a later date; the upper side of the basin shows evidence of damage, probably related to the staple(s) of the old cover; the inner basin is lined, the lead (?) lining wrapping around the upper rim of the basin. The present cover is of a later date: a plain round platform with four scroll ribs at 90-degree angles on it.
