Noted in Glynne's visit on 19 November 1863 (in Butler, 2007): "The font has a circular bowl and may be early." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period, although this same source suggests that the font "may be Saxon". The entry for Appleton-le-Street in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914) notes: "Much detail remains of a church of 12th-century date, but the earliest part of the present structure is the tower, which appears to have been built late in the 16th century. [...] The font is modern. In the churchyard, to the west of the porch, is a dilapidated font of the 12th century." Morris (1931) notes: "Outside porch, W: rude, circular, 12th-cent. font." Bulmer's Directory for this county (1890) informs that "the old Norman font has been relegated to the churchyard"; the present "font (Hildenley stone) is supported by a thick central shaft, surrounded by eight smaller ones of marble" and was "designed and carved by the late Rev. C. P. Peach" ca. 1870. The basin well has a central drain and there are three holes in the upper rim corresponding to the hardware of an old font-cover. The side-view of the font appears to indicated that aither the font has been broke and restored in the past, or that it is made of several blocks cemented together. The location of this font in the churchyard confirmed on 20 November 2005.

The 'A Church Near You' web site [www.achurchnearyou.com] entry for Amotherby reports the font: "now stands outside near the porch" [web site visited 16 November 2005].
