Church Notes: Noted in Bulmer's History and Directory of North Yorkshire (1890) [2007 transcription by Colin Hinson in http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Wensley/Wensley90.html [accessed 4 September 2007]: "The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, dates from the reign of Henry III.; but there is reason to believe that Wensley had its church in Saxon times, and that the rudely sculptured stone, bearing the name of DONFRID, now preserved in the vestry, is a relic of that structure. The nave appears to have been restored in the Tudor period, probably in the reign of Henry VII. The tower was repaired and modernised in the early part of last century."
Font Notes:
Cox-Harvey (1907): "Wensley is an instance of a font (c. 1500) being ejected by the Puritans, and replaced in 1662, when that date and an inscription was added." The font is octagonal all over; the basin sides have floral motifs, and one of the sides bears an inscription with the date 1662 and some letters; the chamfer is plain as are the pedestal of the base and lower base, except for a few mouldings. Bond (1908), however, describes it as one of several "pseudo-Gothic fonts of the Restoration", and states that "hanging would not have been good enough for those who wrought the fonts at Tuxford [...] and Bottesford [...], or that of Wensley [...], to which the churchwardens in proud satisfaction affixed their initials". Morris (1931) writes: "Restoration font, dated 1662, and inscribed, 'Church Ma ('a' inverted) sters looke to your chargeis'. The letters are badly cut, and one panel is in relief -- the other merely incised." In Betjeman (1958) as "1662 font and cover", without a question. Pevsner (1985 c.1966) notes: "Font. 1662., with the familiar elementary motifs and initials -- Font Cover. Probably of the same date. Ogee-shaped, with a pineapple at the top." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE0920789535] notes: "Church. C13, C14, C15, and 1719. [...] Octagonal font dated 1662, with contemporary wooden cover with pineapple finial."
