Described in Bulmer's Directory... (1890) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Morris (1931) writes: "Interesting Norm[an] font. Round the shallow bowl, which rests upon the ground, runs an arcade similar to those at Easby and Great Edstone." Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period, a "plainly arcaded tub font [...] illustrated in Churches of Scarborough and District (1846)". Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a Norman font the basin of which is decorated with an "arcade in relief, imitating closely the structural arcade of the period" [NB: Tyrrell-Green lists it only as "Ayton (Yorks.)"]. Noted in Pevsner (1985): "Font. Round, Norman, with rather bold arches." Blair (2005) suggests "probably eleventh-century" dating, and provides a drawing to scale of the font.
