Font Notes:
There are two entries for Hayton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SE8246/hayton/] [accessed 28 July 2014], one of which, in the lordship and chief tenancy of King William, reports a church in it. Moule (1837) mentions a font "of very early date" in this church. Bulmer's directory of 1892 notes: "The ancient font was discovered and replaced in the church after the late restoration. It is octagonal in shape, and has the appearance of considerable antiquity." [NB: the restoration took place in 1860]. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Decorated period.
