Font Notes:
A baptismal font in Whatton church is described in The Gentleman's Magazine (issue of February 1825: 105): "the font is octagonal, adorned with roses, tulips, and fleurs de lys". Noted in Kelly's Directory of 1881as a font of 1662. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Early English period in Whatton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire [NB: Whatton is now in Nottinghamshire]. Another font, dated 1662, is listed for the same locality in this source (ibid.: 174). Cox (1912) writes: "Octagonal font, 1662, has rose, tulip, fleur-de-lis, &c., stiffly carved on panels." Guilford (1927) notes only one font in this church: "The font is dated 1662 and is sculptured on five sides." This 17th-century font is also mentioned in a Transactions of the Thoroton Society paper (4 (1900)). Pevsner & Williamson (1979) mention a 17th-century font similar to the one at Southwell and other county fonts of that type and period. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SK7450139674] informs: "Parish church. Cll, C14. North aisle C14. Chancel and south aisle rebuilt 1846. Nave and tower rebuilt by Rev. T. Butler, 1870 [...] ashlar font, 1662, with panelled octagonal stem inscribed with shield and date. Tapered panelled octagonal bowl with strapwork. C18 wooden cover with turned knob." The entry for this church in Southwell Churches [https://southwellchurches.nottingham.ac.uk/whatton/hfitting.php] [accessed 17 February 2025] illustrates the font and informs: "Pedestal font with octagonal bowl with carved designs in front and side panels, back three plain. Octagonal stem with centre panel dated 1662. Set on a plain circular base with chamfered top edge."
