There is an entry for this Driffield [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TA0257/great-driffield/] [accessed 27 July 2014], but there is no mention of either church or cleric in it. Sheahan & Whellan (1857) write: ''The present font is modern, the ancient one being placed in the belfry.'' Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy example of Early-English baptismal font. Noted in Hobson (1924) with an Early English font. In Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an early baptismal font with a circular basin raised over a central support and four outer colonnettes. In Pevsner & Neave (1995): ''Font. Circular, on support with waterleaf capitals, i.e., c.1180.'' Local sources [cited by Colin Hinson -visit of August 2007 reported to BSI] suggest date of font ca. 1170s [cf. Pevsner & Neave supra], in which case the basin alone would date from then, the base a later addition? Flat wooden cover; appears modern.
